Today I am reviewing the CM174 Thermal Imaging Clamp Meter from Flir. The Flir CM174 is a truly unique clamp meter with a built in thermal imaging camera. This combination of technology enables the user to locate potential electrical problems designated by abnormal temperatures in cluttered wires, electrical boxes, panels, cabinets, etc. with the follow-up ability to test perceived problems with the clamp meter or test leads. The Flir CM174 is useful in many different electrical applications, HVAC, security, and much more.

The Flir CM174 can measure AC/DC Voltage up to 1000V, AC/DC Current up to 600A, inrush AC current up to 600A, frequency up to 60kHz, resistance up to 6000Ω, continuity up to 600Ω, capacitance up to 1000μF, and diode testing up to 1.5V. The Flir CM174 features True RMS measurements, 6000 count 2” display, 1.38” jaw opening, 60x80 thermal image resolution, -13°F to 302°F (-25°C to 150°C) temperature range, 30:1 distance to target ratio, a bright worklight to see in dark areas, crosshair and laser guide, low impedance testing (LoZ), and variable frequency drive mode (VFD).

Using the Flir CM174 is simple aim and point operation in terms of using the thermal imaging camera aspect of the device. The on-screen crosshair and laser guide helps the user aim and pinpoint trouble spots. After a trouble location has been discovered, the user will then operate the clamp meter as a typical clamp meter by clamping onto wires, cables, etc. or by using test leads. The thermal imaging aspect of the Flir CM174 eliminates a lot of guessing, and leads the user directly to the problem at hand.
